accepting what is
This past week I have been focused on the core of the Serenity Prayer:
“To accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”
A powerful accompaniment is the exercise of F.A.C.T
FACING
ACCEPTING
CHOOSING
TAKING ACTION
First, FACING a painful part of reality today (what's real and true) and then exploring NOT facing that reality. (What's my not-facing style? Going blank, checking out, getting busy... )
I explore exaggerating my NOT FACING posture: hackles up, screaming, punching, kicking to expel the emotions that arise. Breathing and arriving finally at homeostasis.
For example, FACING: "DT was elected president " and "Many people I love are suffering as a result"
Moment by moment, I want to ACCEPT this (for the freedom it provides me to stop fighting it) and I don't want to accept this (How? Why??? WTF?? What can I say to make it easier? To help??)
And the "what do I really want" of CHOOSING and TAKING ACTION are microscopic, baby steps. For example: “I want to feel safe and to appreciate the sun shining into my house, so today I will wash the windows.” It can be that simple. Again and again.
I offer myself as guide for you. Please get in touch if you’d like to schedule an hour for exploration and, ideally, acceptance of what IS today.
